When deciding whether to post “For Sale by Owner” or as a Dealer, please review the following distinctions carefully.
When to Post as a Dealer
If you’re selling multiple passenger or non-passenger vehicles, heavy equipment, or recreational vehicles, you must register your Kijiji account as a dealer.
Examples of related business activity include:
- Licensed dealerships, detailers, or repair shops
- Brokers or online vehicle sales representatives
- Small businesses or home-based “fix and flip” operations
- Individuals who regularly sell vehicles for profit
Note: If your household frequently lists cars, RVs, or heavy equipment for sale, your account may be identified as a dealer account, even if you are not officially registered as a business. High-volume or ongoing sales activity automatically qualifies as dealer-level activity on Kijiji.
Government Regulations for Individual Sellers
In many Canadian provinces, there are legal limits on how many vehicles a private individual can sell per year before being considered a dealer under local consumer protection laws.
These regulations are designed to:
- Ensure transparency and fairness in vehicle transactions
- Protect consumers against unlicensed or deceptive sales practices
- Require proper disclosure of a vehicle’s history, condition, and ownership status
Each province or territory has its own rules:
- Ontario: Under the Motor Vehicle Dealers Act (MVDA), individuals who sell or lease vehicles for profit on an ongoing basis must be registered with the Ontario Motor Vehicle Industry Council (OMVIC).
- Alberta: The Alberta Motor Vehicle Industry Council (AMVIC) requires dealer licensing for anyone who buys and sells vehicles for profit.
- British Columbia: The Vehicle Sales Authority (VSA) regulates all vehicle sales; repeated or profit-based selling without a licence may breach provincial law.
If you’re unsure whether your activity qualifies as private or dealer-level, we recommend checking your provincial motor vehicle sales regulator before posting.
Why It Matters
These rules help maintain a safe, transparent, and trustworthy marketplace for both buyers and sellers. By following them, you ensure compliance with provincial law and support the integrity of Kijiji’s community.
