## What is Smart Meetup?

**Smart Meetup** is an optional feature inside Kijiji chat that helps buyers and sellers easily coordinate an in-person meeting. Instead of sending addresses back and forth, either party can suggest a convenient, publicly accessible meeting spot—such as community centres, transit hubs, or post offices—and optionally agree on a date and time.

Once both parties agree on a location and time, a **Confirmed Meetup Card** is pinned directly to the top of your chat thread. This card includes:

- The agreed location name and address.

- The scheduled meeting date and time.

- Direct links to open the address in Google Maps or Apple Maps for navigation.

## How Smart Meetup Works

### 1. Suggesting a Location

- In your active chat conversation, select **Smart Meetup**.

- Choose from a list of nearby suggested public locations.

- Optionally select a proposed date and time.

- Send the suggestion to the other party.

> **Note:** Before sending your first suggestion, you will be prompted to review and check a brief disclaimer confirming you understand how suggested locations are sourced.

### 2. Accepting or Countering

- The recipient can **Accept** the proposed spot and time or **Suggest a new spot** / counter-propose a different time.

- Once both users accept, the confirmed meetup details will be pinned to the chat conversation.

### 3. Modifying or Rescheduling

Plans change, and you can update your meetup details at any point prior to meeting:

- **Change location:** Click **Suggest a new spot** on the pinned meetup card.

- **Change date or time:** Click **Edit** next to the date and time on the card.

- Any edits or new suggestions require the other party’s acceptance before the card updates.

### 4. It Is Entirely Optional

You are never required to use Smart Meetup. If you prefer to coordinate details manually, simply continue chatting as normal.

## Understanding Suggested Locations

Kijiji provides suggested locations to make choosing a common meeting point simpler, but please keep the following in mind:

- **Sourced from Public Data:** Suggested locations are populated using publicly available data sets.

- **No Endorsement or Guarantee:** Kijiji does not own, operate, inspect, endorse, or guarantee any suggested location.

- **Always Check Operating Hours:** Hours of operation can change without notice. We strongly recommend checking the location’s current operating hours and accessibility prior to heading out.

- **Suggestions Only:** These spots are suggestions only—always use your own judgment when deciding where and when to meet.

## Safety Guidelines & Best Practices

Smart Meetup is designed to assist with logistics; **it does not monitor meetings, verify individual users, or vet transactions.**

Whenever meeting someone from an online marketplace, always practice standard safety precautions:

- **Meet in Public, Well-Lit Places:** Meet during daylight hours in busy, open areas.

- **Bring a Companion:** Whenever possible, bring a friend or family member along.

- **Share Your Plans:** Inform someone close to you where you are going, who you are meeting, and when you expect to return.

- **Keep Payment Secure:** Avoid carrying large amounts of cash where possible. Inspect items thoroughly before completing payment.

- **Trust Your Instincts:** If a situation, location, or user feels uncomfortable or suspicious, cancel the meetup immediately.

## Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

### Does using Smart Meetup mean the other user is verified or trustworthy?

**No.** Smart Meetup only assists with coordinating a public meeting place. It does not vet, screen, or verify either user or guarantee the safety of the transaction. Standard marketplace safety precautions must always be observed.

### Why do I have to agree to a disclaimer before using the feature?

The disclaimer ensures that all users understand that locations are generated from public third-party data and that Kijiji does not inspect, guarantee, or monitor these locations or the meetups themselves.

### What should we do if the suggested location is closed or inaccessible?

Because operating hours are pulled from public sources and may vary on holidays or weekends, always verify the venue’s open hours before leaving. If a location is closed upon arrival, open your chat thread and select **Suggest a new spot** to pick an alternative public venue.

### Can customer support recommend a specific “safe” location for me?

Customer support cannot recommend or endorse specific locations. Please refer to the suggestions generated within the Smart Meetup tool or review our general Safety Tips to choose a location that fits your personal comfort level.

### What should I do if an emergency or incident occurs?

- **In an ongoing emergency:** Immediately call **911** or your local emergency services. Kijiji is not an emergency response provider and does not monitor meetups in real time.

- **Reporting an incident afterward:** Once you are safe, please report the account and incident directly to Kijiji Support so our Trust & Safety team can review the user’s profile and take appropriate platform action.
