I was contacted by buyers claiming to be interested in what I have for sale, a pop-up tent. The first one asked, right from the start, to contact them via text message on their phone. She asked to come visit on a Friday morning. I gave her another option, which she accepted, and then I provided my address. She replied asking for my phone number again, supposedly to contact me when she was very close by. I confirmed on the day of the visit itself. She replied that their plans had changed and they decided to go with another seller. The response was in English, whereas all other communications had been in French. The user’s name is “Louise”, 9 years on Kijiji. No comments or statistics on their profile.

The other user, “Manon”, contacted me the day after the first one, asking for a visit on the same day as the first user. She didn’t ask any questions about my pop-up tent, but only asked for my address. I asked her what time she wanted to come. No response. The user has been on Kijiji for 7 years and has no statistics or comments on their profile.

I suspect that both users are operated by the same person(s). They are trying to obtain personal information for future fraud/identity theft.

Thank you.

Let me begin by saying that I’m very sorry to hear that
you’ve had such an unexpected and troubling experience with another user.

While it may not seem like it at the moment, oftentimes issues like this can still be
resolved between the parties, and I hope this still remains an option for you. I wish
there was something tangible that we could do to help you, but ultimately Kijiji is
simply a platform that connects buyers and sellers; we don’t get involved in any of
the transactions or item disputes between our users, and we don’t offer any type of financial repayment.

What we can do is offer you guidance in your recourse with the following 2
suggestions. If the matter can’t be settled on your own, one option is to contact your
local police department to see if they can assist you. If they can, please ask them to
contact us (by submitting a ticket like you just did) and our team of experts will be
more than happy to help with the investigation. You may also choose to seek
professional legal counsel to help determine if you have any recourse against the other user.

Hi Rob,

I tried calling the police but they said its a matter that i would have to be treated by small claims court..

He said its not fraud.. wich i find strange

Anyways not worth the trouble for that amount of money.

But i find it quite insulting that he can do this without any consequences

…verified seller ?

I must inform you that the role of Kijiji in this situation is strictly limited to providing the meeting ground for buyers and sellers. Kijiji aims to bring together online community users in an effort to encourage an open buying/selling environment. However, Kijiji is not responsible for the quality of the items purchased and/or services provided.

To reiterate, Kijiji is a local platform to connect buyers and sellers. All transactions - and the details of these transactions - are completed between the involved parties. Kijiji is not involved in the details of said transactions, nor do we offer any types of verification regarding users, payment services or insurance.

In regards to the Kijiji Interact Verification program, Verification does not guarantee the safety or security of a transaction. Interac Verified solutions help verify a user’s identity through either a participating financial institution (Interac verification service) or using accepted government-issued identification and a live selfie (Interac document service) but it’s still important to follow smart buying and selling practices whether someone is verified or not.

So unfortunately we do consider this matter resolved and I as mentioned, we will not get involved in the item disputes due to the reasons I outlined.

Hi Rob,

I totally understand everything you are saying..

But he simply ghosted me from the start..

I’m like ..wow! How easy it is to just stay silent and nothing comes of it..

I was hoping he would get a strike on his account or something..

And yeah i mention that verified badge .. because i was proud of mine and you know ..when you build your reputation by not beeing dishonest.. not robbing anyone..duno .. his batch looks exactly like mine but he turns out to be a thief..

Just so you know. I mentioned this situation on the canadian guitar forum and within 48hrs members found some good info on the guy ..even another member tried to buy another item he had for sale and set up a meeting at a gas station ..only to be told at the last minute that he wouldn’t meet up but would ship… very sketchy…

And it seems this guy posts pictures of his neighbor’s house as his own and the internet detectives found his address with the angle of the shots..

This is wacky and really made me laugh..
