Once you’ve met, inspected the item, and agreed on a price, it’s time to finalize the transaction. There are several ways to transfer money, whether online or in person. Understanding the benefits and risks of each method will help keep your transaction safe.

* * *

**Deposits**

Some sellers may request a deposit to hold an item. **Be aware:** deposits are often **non-refundable** , and it’s generally not recommended to pay one, especially for items like vehicles that you haven’t inspected in person.

If you do consider paying a deposit:

- **Verify the seller:** review their account history, age, and ratings.
- **Request contact details:** ask for a phone number and speak with the seller directly before sending any money.
- **Trust your instincts:** if you feel uncertain, it may be safer to move on to another deal.

* * *

**Cash**

Cash is one of the safest payment methods because it’s hard to counterfeit. However:

- For large amounts, familiarize yourself with how to **[spot counterfeit bills](https://community.kijiji.ca/t/fake-canadian-currency/76)**
- Carrying large sums of cash as a buyer carries some risk and may be less convenient.

* * *

**Cheques**

Cheques are easier to fake than cash and may bounce. To reduce risk:

- Ask for a **certified cheque**.
- Go to the bank together with the buyer to cash it before handing over the item.

* * *

**Bank Drafts**

For higher-value transactions, bank drafts can provide additional security:

- Consider arranging a **joint visit to the buyer’s bank**.
- Both parties can confirm the funds are withdrawn from the buyer’s account by witnessing the purchase of the bank draft.
- It’s safest to wait until the draft clears and the money is in your account before finalizing the sale.
- Preferred Secure Cashless Payment Methods

As an alternative to cash, you can use secure cashless payment methods such as **electronic money transfers (e.g., Interac e-Transfers)**.

- Never mail a cheque or wire money to a seller.
- Avoid services like **Western Union or MoneyGram** , as they are commonly used by scammers.
- Keep transactions local and verifiable.

**Money Transfers / Western Union / MoneyGram**

Wire transfers are difficult to verify and easy to fake. If you accept this method:

- **Do not hand over the item** until you’ve confirmed the funds are fully in your account.
- If a buyer asks you to move part of the funds elsewhere before receiving the money, **refuse immediately** —this is a common scam.

**Remember:** always review seller or buyer details, trust your instincts, and prioritize safety over convenience. A little caution can prevent significant losses.
